Much’s VJ Search Hits Humber

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on October 22, 2005 by MarkEightThree

MuchMusic is bringing its VJ Search contest to Humber College, and they’re looking at you to be their next VJ.

Since 1995, Much has held the contest every other year, giving young hopefuls across Canada the chance to land the job of their dreams at the nation’s music station. Some former winners include Bradford How, who has since moved on to co-host VH1’s Top 20 Countdown, Diego Fuentes who is now a VJ for Much’s sister station MuchMoreMusic and Devon Soltendieck, the winner of the previous search who remains with Much as an on-air personality.

For the 2006 VJ Search, Much is mixing up the formula and turning the finals of the contest into a prime-time series with nine hour- long episodes and a live two-hour finale to crown Much’s newest veejay.

The search, hosted and managed by Much’s Aliya Savoni, kicked off on Oct. 3 in Victoria, B.C. and will continue on an eight-week national tour before making its final stop on Nov. 25 in Fredericton, N.B.

Fans can go to MuchMusic.com to keep up with the search and check out photo galleries, video clips and a blog kept by Savoni as she treks across Canada. The Much veejays’s are also making special appearances at certain locations. Much’s resident blond bombshell Leah Miller was live on location for the Edmonton leg of the tour, where fans were eager to get a shot at 15 minutes of fame.

“There’s been great reaction from the fans, obviously,” Miller said. “I’m going to West Edmonton Mall tomorrow, and the last time we came up we had the best response here in Edmonton, so I’m looking forward to it.”

Not only is the VJ Search a chance to have some fun, it’s also a shot at an exciting opportunity to work in the entertainment industry.

“Devon Soltendieck was the last VJ Search winner, and if you look at his career he’s done unbelievably well,” Miller said. “It’s been almost two years and a month ago (since he won). He was (just) interviewing Kirsten Dunst and Orlando Bloom, he just did a Live @ Much with Audioslave, he’s just doing fantastic, and that’s the same with all the other past winners as well.”

Miller’s already seen some crazy sights on the tour, such as a guy diving into a pool in a mall from the second floor, and a few wannabe-veejay’s dressed in frog suits. But Miller said the best way to get yourself noticed is to drop the gimmicks and bring your true personality to the audition.

“When I started auditioning, I was just trying to be comfortable and be myself because I think that really translates well on television and people can relate to you better,” Miller said. “It’s all about connecting with the fans. That’s the most gratifying part of the job for me, meeting people and seeing that they really like what I do on TV.”

The 10 finalists will be flown to Toronto to stay at the luxurious VJ Search Penthouse, where they will be under constant scrutiny and face challenges that will reveal their personalities, skills and character.

“Be yourself and give it a shot. Even if you’re nervous, just get up there and do your thing,” Miller said.

The search will be held in the North Campus Student Centre at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 3.

Tony Lee Visits Humber College

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on October 16, 2005 by MarkEightThree

Anyone walking by Caps on Wednesday afternoon probably wondered why there were three guys getting it on with their chairs.

It was just a small part of Tony Lee’s hypnotist performance for a large crowd that gathered to watch the 20-year veteran of hypnotism do his thing.
Lee called upon a group of willing volunteers to get up on stage and attempt to be hypnotized, and those who did spent the next hour doing his every command, from simulating lewd sexual acts to taking a trip back in time and pretending to be elementary school students – but all in good fun. Revenge will rev you up

Burnout Revenge | Sony Playstation 2

br.jpgBurnout Revenge will ruin the way you look at racing games.

After playing any of Revenge’s modes and having the ability to ‘check’ traffic into other racers ahead of you, playing Gran Turismo will seem like a quaint Sunday drive.

This new addition to the Burnout series and watching the mayhem it produces will blow you away the first time you see it. It does however, take away some of the tense moments from the previous games in the series where you’ll be racing furiously only to rear-end the hatchback in front of you.

Jumping into the game may be intimidating at first, with so many options available from the outset and no exact direction pointed out to gamers. It’s a problem that’s encountered in many other of Electronic Art’s games such as SSX3 and the NBA Street series, but once you become comfortable with the pace of the game and its endless tasks, you’ll welcome the depth it has to offer.

Gamers would be hard pressed to find a Playstation 2 game that rivals the beauty that is the graphics of Revenge. Explosions burst with fluidity, lights reflect accurately off cars and more chunks than you can count fly off your car. It’s a wonder why Sony and it’s competitors are rushing to launch new platforms when the current generation still has so much under the hood.

The game’s soundtrack is also a highpoint, mixing electronic artists like Andy Hunter and The Chemical Brothers with pop punk groups like Yellowcard, Billy Talent and Fall Out Boy.

One of the most chaotic racing games ever produced, Criterion Software’s fourth entry into the Burnout series takes everything that has come before it and compiles it into a loaded package that will provide race fans hours upon hours of entertainment, especially for those who strive to accomplish every last goal the game puts forth.

Nostalgia Available on DVD

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on October 14, 2005 by MarkEightThree

With almost every television show quickly being released to DVD, it was a matter of time before everyone’s favourite childhood memories started showing up.

Volumes of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Spider-Man, Thundercats, Transformers and other retro television shows have already been released with more coming in the near future.

Everyone’s favourite barbarian hits store shelves Oct. 18 when He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Season One Volume One is released to stores. The second volume of Thundercats first season will land in time for the holidays with a Dec. 6 release date.

The first volume of Thundercats is currently one of the hottest selling DVD sets available.

“We’ve actually completely sold out of it,” said Marc Ibarra of Square One’s Starstruck Entertainment. “When it comes to television DVDs, it’s our best-seller. Usually we get a lot of 20-somethings buying it, but we usually get a lot of guys buying it for their kids as well.”

The past few years have also seen steady releases from Hanna-Barbara, creators of perhaps what are history’s most famous animated series. Nov. 15 will see the release of The Flinstones fourth season, as well as the first volume of The Huckleberry Hound Show. Already released from the studio are collections of Scooby-Doo, The Jetsons, and Wacky Races and Dastardly & Muttley in Their Flying Machines, all affordably priced in the $30 to $40 range.

Fans of the hugely popular Transformers will be happy to know (if they don’t already) that the entire series run is available to own on DVD, as is the 1986 movie released theatrically.

Little girls looking for a role model in the late ’80s found one when Jem hit television screens in 1985. Although the show was originally designed by Hasbro to market a line of their dolls, its pop star concept at a time when MTV was everywhere made it a fan favourite among young girls.

“I remember I wanted to be Jem, like very badly,” said Jenna Patton, first-year radio broadcasting student. “I had pink hair at one point, and it was totally because of Jem. I made a Jem and the Holograms T-shirt because I wanted one so badly.”

Although the shows lack the polish sported by today’s current animation, it’s the nostalgia factor that has students like Sean McNamara, also in his first year of radio broadcasting, coming back to them years later.

“They’re almost more entertaining to watch now because you notice how a lot of the animation is really cheesy and it makes you laugh,” McNamara said.

Two for the Money Review

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on October 14, 2005 by MarkEightThree

In its attempt to toe the line between comedy and drama, Two for the Money unfortunately fails at both.

Al Pacino plays Walter Abrams, head of the largest sports betting advising operation in the country. He recruits Brandon Lang, a former college football star played by Matthew McConaughey, to be his newest advisor. After much persuasion from Abrams, Lang agrees to drop his small-town persona to live the action-filled life of a New York City hustler.

One of the problems with the film is although it primarily focuses on three main characters consisting of Abrams, Lang and Toni (Abrams’ wife played by Rene Russo), the characters never establish themselves, often contradicting their personality traits from one scene to the next. One moment Lang is an honest country boy trying to make an honest living, the next he’s swindling bettors out of thousands of dollars.

It’s inconsistencies like these that kill the flow of the movie and never fully allow the viewer to connect with the film. It also doesn’t help that certain plot points, such as a confrontation between Abrams and Lang, seem to be pivotal to the movie, but they fail to lead anywhere and serve no purpose in the end. For all the talk in the film of pushing limits too far, the movie fails to do so itself.

There are, however, some genuine laughs to be had in Two for the Money. The pairing of McConaughey and Pacino works out well, as the two seem to share an on-screen chemistry, which makes it all the more unfortunate that a film built around the pair fails on many levels. Given more to work with, the two actors could have really brought the characters of Abrams and Lang to life but, sadly, the writing just isn’t there to support their performances.

Surely, there’s a moral lesson about the world of gambling to be had from Two for the Money, but you would be hard pressed to find it in this mess.

The Hussman Cometh: A Look at Jimmy Jacobs

If the present tells anything of Jimmy Jacobs’ future, its to expect great things. He’s currently the Heavyweight Champion in IWA Mid South, as well as one half of the current Ring of Honor Tag Team Champions, holding major titles belonging to two of North America’s largest independent wrestling companies, and all at the age of 21.

Before Jacobs hit the ring to take on Nick Watts at the last UWA Hardcore show, I had a chance to sit down with the ‘Hussman’ and delve into a bit of his background with him.

Jacobs began his training at the Lakeshore Wrestling Organization under the tutelage of Joe Ortega, who was trained himself by legendary trainer Jose Lothario.
