The Darkness in Rock Band, pretty please.

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on March 22, 2008 by MarkEightThree

While searching for info on Starbreeze Studio’s The Darkness [$19.99 at Best Buy during their online only sale!], I came across this monster piece of music that I had completely forgotten about. Why the hell isn’t this in Rock Band? The only logical explanation is that it’s just too much for one Xbox to handle. Every 360 this song is downloaded to would instantly Red Ring and explode into a cloud of glitter and purple dust. If not that, than it must be because there aren’t enough USB ports to plug in all of your instruments plus the all-new panty tossing machine which would have to be released specifically for this song. Actually, that one makes more sense.

Just listen to the riddim of my HEARRRRTTT! This song is going to be stuck in my head all weekend…. not like that’s a bad thing.

Update on Bully SE patch coming soon

Second UPDATE 03.20.08: Nevermind. The game locked up again while I was playing ‘Consumo.’ Also, the audio is sounding even worse now, as it’s incredibly choppy. This is beyond frustrating.

First UPDATE 03.20.08: No word from Rockstar yet, but upon booting up Bully on my 360 today, I was asked to install an update. Is this the big patch Bully: Scholarship Edition owners are waiting for? Probably, as I’ve played it for a bit and have yet to run into any problems. Also, the main menu now displays 1.03 [most likely referencing the version number] on the lower right hand corner of the screen.

According to Kotaku, Rockstar is planning to update everyone on the glitching issues regarding Bully: ScholarshipEdition tomorrow. Hopefully this means a patch for the title within the next couple of days to appease all those burned by that meddling Hopkins boy.

If you haven’t heard, the Xbox 360 version of Bully has been giving gamers a proverbial wedgie lately, with its barrage of glitches, lock-ups and general suckness. About the only thing the Scholarship Edition has going for it right now is its gameplay, which unfortunately, most people can’t enjoy because of these problems.

Sam Houser, Co-founder of Rockstar and Executive Producer of Bully, replied to the situation with the following:

Activision admitted long ago that they were interested in branching out the Guitar Hero franchise, and after much speculation and swirling rumours, IGN has finally pulled back the curtain and revealed Guitar Hero: On Tour for the Nintendo DS.

Handheld veterans Vicarious Visions [who were also responsible for the Wii port of GH III: Legends of Rock] will be developing the title, bringing the same style of gameplay known on the console versions to the portable realm. Working together with peripheral makers Red Octane, the team have created a fret-button attachment titled the Guitar Grip that locks into the DS’s GBA slot.

Zero Punctuation looks at Turok

No big write-up here, just wanted to bring to your attention that The Escapist has a new review from the incomparable Yahtzee. This week the Aussie chap takes a big steaming crap on the recently released Turok, while also managing to take shots at the entire FPS genre.

If you haven’t seen one of Yahtzee’s reviews before, be warned that they’re not for the easily offended. Or people who have an intense hatred for the color yellow. Seriously WTF is up with this guy and yellow?

Experience Roundup: Assassin’s Creed

For the past week I’ve been dedicating all of my Xbox time to finally completing Assassin’s Creed, as it’s been almost three months since I’ve gotten it and all I managed to do was complete the animus tutorial. I was impressed with what little of it I played, but not enough to tear me away from Bioshock, Mass Effect and My Forbidden Crush, which is my MCR cover band that was just inducted into the Rock Band Hall of Fame [more on that later].

Although Assassin’s Creed starts out as a great concept, it quickly deteriorates into a boring set of chores that are stuck on a cycle of rinse and repeat. There are memorable moments that will take place during your time in the kingdom, but being able to remember exactly what city they took place in and during what mission will be next to impossible. The moments centered around Desmond and the Abstergo laboratory offer a refreshing change of scenery, but unfortunately there is next to nothing to do during these mission breaks aside from talking to Lucy [an employee of Abstergo with your best interests in mind] and reading emails.

Potter fans now have twice as much Harry to get excited over

The LA Times is reporting here that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, the final book of J.K Rowling’s teen-wizard saga will be adapted into two films as opposed to just a single film like every other book in the series.

The first film will be released in November 2010 while the second will see release a short seven months later in May 2011. Both films are being directed by David Yates, who also directed Order of the Phoenix and the upcoming Half-Blood Prince. Look for both films to carry the simple subtitles ‘Part I’ and ‘Part II.’

Having read the Deathly Hollows, I’m anticipating these flicks even more now that I know the entire book won’t have to be crammed into three hours. It would be impossible to trim the novel down to a few hours without having to cut out some of the action or lose one of the important sub-plots. I can’t wait to see how the filmmakers bring the Gringott’s heist to life on the big screen, it should be amazing. This is definitely a win-win situation for both the fans of the series and Warner Brothers, as the WB just secured themselves another truckload of money and you know HP lovers aren’t going to turn down the idea of an eight Potter flick, especially when the source material is so strong.

UWA’s back from the dead and onto DVD

When the Hall of Saints is closed, the hardcore shall walk amongst the living…. and then entertain them once again on home video. UWA Hardcore’s triumphant return is now available to buy on the glorious format of DVD [Eat it Blu-ray, your small victory over HD-DVD proves nothing!] featuring the backstage antics of UWA’s regular cast of hooligans and the breathtaking art of Mr. Derek Laufman. Epic much? Yes, but Derek’s art on this release truly is amazing, especially for fans of George Romero and the Zombie genre.

After being unexpectedly stripped of their beloved St. John’s Hall back in mid-2007, UWA Hardcore was put into hibernation until early January, when Osiris and Joe E. Slick, UWA’s owners, announced that the fed had found a new home at Downsview Park in Toronto. With the stage set for an emotional return, UWA burst back onto the scene with a fairly strong show. Fans were treated to the surprise returns of both Petey Williams, who had not been seen in UWA since 2006, and UWA Lightweight Champ Horimi Horiguchi, who wasn’t announced nor expected to make the trip from Japan. There were a few kinks in the show to be worked out, but after being out of action for so long and debuting in a new venue, it was about as good as a return as UWA could have hoped for. The potential is definitely there for UWA to expand to new heights not yet reached by the fed.

UWA has begun producing highlight reels of their shows, with Resurrection being the first. Click here to pick up the show and to see the matches of UWA Hardcore Resurrection. Highlight reel after the break on the YouTube-powered Jeritron 100.

SSBB: The Nintendo Wi-Fi Disconnection

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , on March 10, 2008 by MarkEightThree

page_1.jpg

In addition to the widespread ‘Disc Read Error’ problems plaguing Wii owners, online play is officially BUSTED in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It’s impossible to connect with random people and I’m having a bitch of a time connecting with friends alone. This seems to be a widespread problem, as many gaming forums across the net are ablaze with complaints from Nintendo-philes who were hoping to be taken to the promise land of online play.

Also, there’s an issue with the online menu as well for a lot of people. For some reason, the Options sub-menu is not appearing within the Nintendo WFC menu, leaving people without spectator mode, the option to submit user created content and the Smash Service, which is the download center for fresh daily content. I’m lucky enough to be in this exclusive club as well.

One of the rumored fixes is to delete your save data and restart everything, which is a little irritating considering I’ve already put over ten hours into this game. Hopefully Monday morning will bring official word from the Big N on how to correct these issues properly.

Update: After waiting a few days for Spectator mode to appear in Brawl’s online menu and not having any luck, I decided to go ahead and delete my data and start over. The good news is this method works, but the obvious bad news is I’ve lost all my progress. Seeing as how Nintendo is still keeping mum on Brawl’s online issues, this seems like the only way to go. If you’re going to go this route, keep in mind that you might want to back up any replays, stages or photos you’ve created to an SD card.
