Activision admitted long ago that they were interested in branching out the Guitar Hero franchise, and after much speculation and swirling rumours, IGN has finally pulled back the curtain and revealed Guitar Hero: On Tour for the Nintendo DS.

Handheld veterans Vicarious Visions [who were also responsible for the Wii port of GH III: Legends of Rock] will be developing the title, bringing the same style of gameplay known on the console versions to the portable realm. Working together with peripheral makers Red Octane, the team have created a fret-button attachment titled the Guitar Grip that locks into the DS’s GBA slot.

In addition to the fret buttons, a thick guitar pick is included in the Guitar Grip so gamers will have something to strum with [strumming with a stylus is lame, Jam Sessions]. The DS’s built in mic will also come into play somehow, which IGN speculates is most likely to be used for activating Star Power and increasing your multiplier.

As for the songs you’ll be rocking out to on the road, Activision has confirmed there will be more than 20 tracks from bands such as OK Go, Nirvana and No Doubt. Six characters will be featured in the game, including two all new shredders created just for this release.

Visit IGN.com for the [extremely lame] trailer and a few more tidbits. Also, in case you were counting, this makes FOUR[!] Guitar Hero games that are seeing release within a one year span, including Guitar Hero Mobile, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith and Guitar Hero IV. A little much?
