My new Canada jersey

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on June 28, 2011 by MarkEightThree

Alright Canada, I get it. We love our hockey, it’s our national winter sport, babies are born with a stick in their hands, etc. However, we’ve also got this other awesome national team that is totally worth cheering for. The Canadian Women’s National team is currently fighting for a spot in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup in Germany and they’re so badass, they totally deserve your support. Team captain Christine Sinclair makes Sid Crosby look like a diva, and might be the closest thing to a female Chuck Norris that we ever see. Umbro’s new Canada Kit is on sale, and it’s super sexy, so go out and pick one up just in time for Canada Day.

EA Sports finally puts me in the game

I tried creating my Game Face when FIFA10 first launched last year, but after an hour of Firefox crashes I gave up. It seems like they’ve finally worked out most of the kinks since I was able to create this badass just in time to start my Real Madrid campaign. I’m pretty impressed by how well it turned out and I can’t wait to utilize it in this fall’s EA MMA.This is a pretty good start for now, but if EA doesn’t make me cover athlete by 2014 I’ll be hella-pissed. Spending real money on my fake Xbox Mark

I finally gave in while browsing the Avatar Marketplace today and picked up a pair of items to pimp my little 360 clone. Although the Star Wars lightsaber looked badass and was mighty tempting, five bucks is a little much for a virtual toy that you can’t even play with so I had to decline. I settled for a pair of Halo 3 cargos and a soccer ball to go along with my Portugal MNT jersey [which I'm still glad was free, thanks Microsoft!]. I feel like a tool for buying virtual clothing for a little version of myself but on the bright side, at least I still have enough MS Points left for a couple of Rock Band tracks. I’m looking forward to a killer app where I can actually use for Avatar though, everything aside from Joy Ride looks pretty lame to be honest. How about a Mario-style epic platformer where your little dude is the star of the show?

Photos from my Super Happy Fun Japan Trip

I’ve finally managed to upload my photos from my trip to Tokyo, so they’re all viewable online at Picasa now. Hit up the link to check them out and leave me any fun comments you might have. I’ve got a few personal favourites in my collection, but considering I cut my batch of photos from 1,500 to just about 190 for this gallery, I’d say these are the near and dear ones to me.

EA Sports debuts the FIFA10 cover athletes

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on August 10, 2009 by MarkEightThree

fifaEarlier today EA Sports released the cover for the North American version of FIFA10, with CuauhtĂ©moc Blanco of Chicago Fire and Sacha Kljestan of Chivas USA representing Major League Soccer. Nowhere near as cool as having Toronto FC’s Maurice Edu on the cover, but I’d still rather have a couple of MLS stars on the cover than a couple of chaps from the English Premiership.

Taking the front and center role is Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard, who takes over the long-held spot from Ronaldinho. That automatically drops the big teeth meter from way too much to just enough. Lampard is also on the UK edition’s cover, but across the pond he plays second fiddle to Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney.

The soundtrack for the game has also been released and can be found after the break. Not found however, is Team Canada in the actual game itself. What the hell EA, what the hell. Read more »

Sights from around the MLS All-Star Game

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on July 28, 2008 by MarkEightThree

Noticed how I said ‘from around’ up there? It’s because I didn’t actually get into the game. Tickets were available for the game, but not at a price that was anywhere near reasonable. I have to hand it to the organizers of the All-Star game though, there were plenty of things going on around BMO Field for those interested in the beautiful game.

A beer garden in BMO’s East parking lot was the venue for UK artist Estelle’s performance of ‘American Boy’ at halftime. There was also a big screen to catch the game which was talking place just a few streamer tosses away.

The TFC Massive was it’s usual self, going strong for the total 90 and making the most noise for hometown boys Jim Brennan and Dwayne DeRosario. Amongst a sea of MLS stars, it was Cuauhtemoc Blanco and David Beckham that shone the brightest in the 3-2 MLS win over West Ham United.

Mo Johnston is bringing footy back

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , on July 14, 2008 by MarkEightThree

From the Archives: In October 2006 I had the opportunity to interview Mo Johnston, who had just recently been appointed Head Coach of the newly created MLS soccer club Toronto FC. Johnston, a former Scottish striker who made his name playing for Celtic and the Rangers of the Scottish Premier League, had nothing but optimistic thoughts on the club’s future and looked forward to getting things started in Toronto.
. . . . . . . .

How did the plan to bring an MLS team to Toronto get set in motion?

Obviously the guys here at MLSE have done their homework. They’re diligent. They’ve invested money, they saw the under-20′s coming here and they knew there was a stadium being built and they were already on board. As soon as they got behind it, things became a realistic opportunity in terms of getting a stadium completed and contending for an MLS championship.

In terms of on-the-field success, what are your expectations for the first season of the Toronto FC?

I’m not going to be shouting crazy and stupid things about us winning a championship. What we’ll do is we’ll compete, we’ll do our homework in terms of scouting the good players here. We’ll work very hard. We have a roster of 18 with 10 development players. The 18 that are on the full roster will be paid, and the younger developmental group will obviously be sliced up from the league, which means these kids won’t make too much, but they’ll be making progress and hopefully they can get to the 18.

TFC v DC United photos from May

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on July 9, 2008 by MarkEightThree

Soccer is easily one of my favourite loves, and I’ve been trying to catch as many footy matches as possible this year. I’ve already been to a few TFC fixtures down at BMO and I was also able to take in a CSL match up in Brampton [wasn't too bad, but there was a lot to improve on].

I’m going to try and upload images from each match after they take place, starting with these images from the Toronto FC v DC United match that took place on May 21st. All images after the break!
